What will happen when you visit? The Osteopathic Practice

Your Osteopath will take a detailed case history on your initial consultation. This will cover your present condition and any relevant history. You will also be asked about your past medical history and any medication which you are currently taking.

In order to examine your spine, sites of pain and your posture, you will normally be required to dress down to your underwear. The Osteopath will then examine you, assessing the site of pain, your general posture and mobility.

Specialised examinations (e.g. reflexes, blood pressure, etc.) may also be performed. The Osteopath must ensure that no serious medical problems are overlooked and, where necessary, you will be referred to your GP for further medical tests.

Treatment is normally comfortable and tailored to the individual’s posture and requirements. Advice and exercises will usually be prescribed with reference to the patient’s lifestyle, work and home environment. The exercises are suggested to maintain a minimum level of fitness necessary to achieve an improved physical state. Where problems appear to recur frequently, we suggest having a six-monthly check-up to minimise the risk of relapse.
